Tourism minister Francisco Javier Garcia announced Friday the construction of a modern cruises terminal in the town Maimon, near Puerto Plata, at a cost of US$65 million, generating around 30 million dollars in its first year in operation. He said the terminal will positively impact the province and can simultaneously berth two boats totaling at least 4,000 passengers.
Garcia said an investment of this breadth by the Carnival Corporation guarantees the project’s success, expeditious construction, and the massive presence of cruise passengers. “The speed of the work stems mostly because that investment doesn’t require any financing or Dominican Government facilities for the investors.” Giora Israel, Carnival Corporation senior vice president for Ports Development and Destinations, said the terminal’s construction is expected to start October 1. The terminal will occupy 50,000 square meters at Maimón Bay, construction will last two years, and provide 800 direct jobs.
Charlotte and Greg Clarke, along with their friends Reg and Donna, sit in the back of my SUV surrounded by all their purchases for their new villa in the Dominican Republic. They are pretty happy because they will completely furnish their 3-bedroom villa and palapa, put in 5 appliances, as well as as kitchenware, linens, BBQ, stereo, TV, etc. – everything they need to have the house turnkey, for less than $17,000. What a fun day shopping we had!
There is a very needed charity at work here in the DR primarily in the Haitian community. The majority of these people are without any source of income to support themselves. This program is ran by very good friends of ours, Bill and Donna Reimer, originally from Kelowna, BC.
The primary purpose of this charity is to feed the many children in these villages through a feeding program, and to help the parents to be able to look after th>eir children in a healthy and supportive environment. Through sponsorships, Dominican Ministries supplies a food supplement program to help feed those that cannot afford enough food for their families. This program provides a hot, nutritious meal to 300+ children every Wednesday and Friday. This program also feeds approx 25 seniors, who have no other means of getting food for themselves for the week.
The Baby & Mama Program Provides food and diapers and other necessities for undernourished or sick babies. As part of the Baby & Mama program, Mondays are “oatmeal day” where new moms, pregnant moms and babies and toddlers are given a nutritious meal of oatmeal and dried fruit. After the meal, babies are weighed and stats are recorded, vitamins given as well as supplies and clothes. This way, there are records of any babies who begin to lose weight or are showing distress and they are put on the supply program for formula and cereal.
